Autumn

The days are getting shorter, the weather is getting colder and there is generally less activity as winter approaches. But with these changes there is no lack of colour. Autumn can be as brilliant as spring or summer with fantastic foliage colour, flowers and sumptuous berries.

We can do it all for you using our team of qualified horticulturists. If you are interested in obtaining these services or just some advice about your garden, email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or ring Attila at Easycare on 6257 8122.

Plants

  • Many plants lose their leaves to protect themselves from freezing temperatures. It is the cooler weather and shortening day length that triggers dormancy.
  • Shorter day length means reduced photosynthesis so plants respond by shutting down energy draining processes like growth and reproduction.
  • All of these changes start to happen both unseen and obvious, but perhaps the most visible change is that chlorophyll, the green pigment in the leaves, begins to break down allowing other coloured pigments like wonderful yellow, red and orange hues to become visible.

  • Prepare strawberry beds with lots of well-rotted organic matter. Place straw over the prepared ground ready for planting.

Tips for gardeners

  • Apply organic matter, a soil wetting agent and a seaweed solution to your whole garden. This will help get your garden and plants in better condition for the winter months ahead. Fertilise roses, hedges and other shrubs.

  • Collect and mow autumn leaves and add them to your compost or just spread them over your garden. Add some lime and blood and bone to the leaves to speed decomposition.
