Fruit and Vegetables
  • Do a final planting of seedlings of cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and Brussels sprouts and protect them from the white cabbage moth with a barrier if possible. Otherwise, spray with Dipel or Success from your local nursery for an organic solution to the caterpillars which will inevitably appear. This will need to be repeated after rain. Give them a regular foliar feed to help them establish well before the cold restricts growth.

  • Pick apples and pears or go to Pialligo and choose some from one of the many orchards. Store your pears in the fridge for about two weeks after harvest and then ripen them at room temperature.

  • Remove any fruit that is diseased or has been attacked by insects. Put them in plastic bags and leave to cook in the sun or cook them in your microwave to kill anything. Throw them in your bin, not the compost or give the fruit suffering insect attack to your chooks.

  • If you have brambles (blackberry-like fruits), you will need to pick up the canes that have been sprawling on the ground and tie the strongest 6 to 8 canes from each plant to wires. The rest can be pruned to the ground.

  • Autumn-bearing raspberries need to be cut to the ground after harvesting the fruit. Summer-bearing raspberries should be pruned in winter.
