Plants
  • Magnificent maples can be large trees and provide much of the Canberra landscape with colour. However, not everybody has room in their garden for trees of this size. It is important to consider the eventual height and spread of the trees in your garden. For smaller gardens a beautiful addition would be one of the smaller varieties of Japanese maple such as Acer palmatum which only grows 3 to 5 metres tall.

  • Weeping maples are grafted onto a standard, which means that they are smaller still. They can have fresh green foliage in spring and summer followed by intense brilliant orange-red in autumn or an endless array of foliage colours from flame reds to deep plums, vivid purples and candy pinks as well as bronze, gold and burnt-orange hues.

  • The camellia season is just beginning, and it is the sasanquas that first catch our eye. Camellia ‘Asakura’ produces showy white flowers with a pink blush to the petal edge and bud. It has a relatively vigorous upright growth, will take sun and makes a lovely hedge. The magnificent glossy Abelia grandiflora flowers all summer long and is very hardy. After the flowers have fallen off they leave behind very attractive pink calyces. Take 10 to 15 cm cuttings from the newly-grown softwood, strip off 2/3rds of the leaves and place in moist potting soil in washed, disposable coffee cups with some holes in the bottom. Store in the shade and keep the soil moist. You should have roots in about 6 weeks and can plant direct in the soil or into a larger pot.
