Remove any diseased or fading annuals and prune all hedges to encourage a new flush of growth. This should be done no later than this month to avoid frost damage.

Prepare garden beds for bulbs and spring flowering annuals by digging in composted organic matter such as manure, well-rotted leaves or compost.

Plant seeds of poppies, primula, pansies, polyanthus, sweet peas and violas

Prune fruit trees such as apricots and cherries which can get canker if the wound doesn’t heal quickly. Apples can also be pruned now to restrict their growth.

Take 10 cm tip cuttings from plants as you prune them.

Adjust irrigation to suit the cooler weather and turn it off when it rains to avoid root rot
