Garden beds

  • Lightly prune plants that have finished flowering
  • Plant evergreens now
  • Sprinkle some animal manure and blood and bone before planting annuals and bulbs

Compost

  • If your compost is exposed, turn it after rain and add a handful of lime or dolomite to prevent the compost going ‘sour’
  • Mow oak leaves before adding them to the compost to help them break down faster

Garden Pests and Diseases

  • Remove weeds to minimise seeding and the over-wintering of pests and diseases
  • Keep an eye out for pear and cherry slug on ornamentals and fruit trees. The telltale sign will be grazed leaves that only have the veins left. Control them by drying them out with vacuum cleaner dust

Fertilising

  • Feed citrus plants lightly with a citrus or all-purpose fertiliser
  • Fertilise lawn with a low nitrogen lawn food just before rain

Growing Bulbs in Pots

  • Apply bulb food once leaves have sprouted and just after flowering
  • Most bulbs require full sun to light shade. Heavier shade will produce taller stems and the reverse happens in full sun
  • As a guide, plant bulbs twice as deep as the bulb is tall and the same distance apart. The pointy end of the bulb should be up except for anemone and ranunculi which you plant pointy end down!
