To promote good practice we have included some maintenance tips here for you.

General

• Prune most plants after flowering
• Keep garden well-mulched
• Best time for planting evergreen species is autumn
• Check drippers regularly to ensure they are working

Lawns

• Mow lawns using the highest lawnmower setting
• Keep the edges clean and well defined
• Change lawn fertiliser every year and fertilise lightly before rain
• Lime your lawn in autumn and spring just before rain

Gardens

• Remove weeds before they seed
• Use mulch of varying sizes so it stays loose
• Add organic matter to your soil to keep it healthy and absorbent

Timber Structures

• Clean and oil unpainted timber twice a year
• Keep soil and mulch clear of timber (including timber fences)
• Tighten the screws in garden settings once a year

Water Features

• Clean filters on a regular basis to prolong their life
• Cover 2/3 of the water surface with plants to discourage algae
• Introduce native fish to reduce mosquito larvae

Reducing Water Usage

• Reduce the size of grassed areas using pavers, decking or gravel
• Water in the cool of the day when there is no sun or wind and follow water restrictions
• Install swales, a rainwater tank or a grey water system
• Use drippers only and install an automatic controller
• Use lots of mulch (50 to 100 mm)
• Apply a soil wetting agent and follow the directions on the packet
• Establish some deciduous trees to shade your house and garden
• Plant your garden with plants from climates similar to ours
• Check water meter for changes overnight. This will indicate if you have a water leak
• Harvest as much of the water that falls on your block as you can.
