Vegetable Gardens
  • From the huge variety of vegetables and herbs, grow those that you and your family love to eat. Consider corn, carrots, cabbage, leek, parsley, chives, thyme, peas, potato, radish, beetroot, rhubarb, silver beet and spinach as well as lettuce and tomatoes.
  • Follow the directions given with the seeds or seedlings and water any seedlings in well. Keep up the water for the first few weeks until the plants have established themselves and then go to a schedule of giving them a deep soak a couple of times a week rather than a superficial watering daily.
  • Keep on top of weeds as they will compete for water and nutrients and potentially crowd your veggies.  Good mulch such as lucerne will help with weed prevention and also reduce evaporation as the weather heats up.
  • If you have room in your garden you may like to consider planting companion planting to help deter pests and encourage healthier plants. For example:

Basil – enhances the taste of tomatoes and helps to protect them from pests and disease. The bonus is you can use the basil in salads and cooking!
Garlic – repels aphids and controls cutworms and hornworms in tomatoes
Horseradish – plant near potatoes to control potato bugs and encourage disease-resistant potato tubers
Chives – help prevent mildew and repel aphids
Catnip – good for controlling flea beetles
Marigolds – produce a root secretion that destroy nematodes in the soil. The bonus is the pretty flowers you can pick and use inside in a vase to brighten a room!
