Floriade, spring gardens and weeds are blooming!

Launch yourself into the garden with some hints and tips on what to prune, what to plant and controlling those pests and diseases that grow so well in spring and summer.

Garden Beds

  • Fertilise garden beds with an all purpose fertilizer such as Dynamic Lifter or add well-rotted compost or leaves
  • Foliar feed all plants with a seaweed extract to build up resistance to the hot conditions of summer
  • If you didn’t do so in autumn, now is the time to plant seedlings of pansies and petunias and other spring and summer-flowering annuals

Lawn

  • Check lawns for soil compaction in high traffic areas (such as where you regularly walk, kids play or you park cars) by pushing a garden fork into these areas.
  • Lightly fertilise with a granulated lawn food such as Dynamic Lifter or Grow Green

Irrigation

  • Check drippers as slugs and earwigs hide in them
  • Turn on automatic irrigation once per fortnight if we get rain or once per week in warmer weather with no rain
  • Top up mulches to conserve as much water as possible as the heat increases

Garden Pests and Diseases

  • Spray azaleas and rhododendrons for lace bug and thrips with Confidor or MaxGuard as the new leaves emerge
  • Roses, peaches, hellebores and many other shrubs may suffer from aphids in early spring
  • Black spot on roses may be a problem in wet weather so spray with Triforine

Vegetables

  • Prepare beds with well-rotted animal manures in readiness for tomatoes, capsicums, corn, potatoes, peas and beans
  • Have tomatoes, eggplant and capsicums started in pots so you can move them under cover if it is going to be frosty and then plant them out into the garden in November
  • Install a drip irrigation system to the vegetable garden to efficiently water the vegetables and reduce the incidence of fungal problems
