Vegetables
  • Prepare beds with well-rotted animal manures in readiness for tomatoes, capsicums, corn, potatoes, peas and beans
  • Have tomatoes, eggplant and capsicums started in pots so you can move them under cover if it is going to be frosty and then plant them out into the garden in November
  • Install a drip irrigation system to the vegetable garden to efficiently water the vegetables and reduce the incidence of fungal problems
  • Mulch with sugar cane or lucerne to conserve moisture and reduce weed competition
  • Start a herb garden with chives, thyme, oregano, parsley and sage. Add some lime to the Mediterranean herbs to sweeten the soil
  • Watch out for caterpillars on cabbages and broccoli. Spray with Success which is a biological control derived from soil bacteria and so is completely safe for humans
  • Spray the crowns of agapanthus with eco-oil to control mealy bug
