- Spread a soil wetting agent over your garden beds
- Add manure, well-rotted compost or leaves – in fact any organic matter!
- Do not do any more planting now unless you are prepared to water over summer. If you do plant, ensure you protect the plants from the hot summer sun by physical means, e.g., an umbrella or shade cloth. Soak the pot in a bucket of water for at least 10 minutes to ensure the root ball is wet before you plant.
- Mulch everything, preferably after rain to protect the soil and shallow roots from the drying effect of the sun.
- Change the settings on your automatic controller and water more often to allow for the increased evaporation and transpiration. Ensure you water deeply rather than shallow and often.
- Weeds that have seeded should go to the recycling or you can solarise them in a plastic bag for a week or two in the hot sun.
- Weeds that haven’t seeded can be pulled out and left to lie on the surface as extra (no cost) mulch
- Check any new growth for aphids and either squash (wear gloves)or spray with a mix of 1 litre of water, a drop of detergent and a tablespoon of brown vinegar. Spraying should be done in the evening.
- Check gum trees and citrus for scale (a sure sign is ants crawling up the trunks) and either squash (wear gloves) or spray with eco oil
- Check roses for aphids and black spot. Spray with Rose Shield or similar. Note: leaves with black spot should be picked off and removed from the ground and binned, not composted.
- Deadhead flowers from roses, annuals and other flowering shrubs
- Plant summer and autumn flowering bulbs and annuals
