Plants
  • Euonymus europaeus (Spindle berry), whose wood was once used for making spindles for spinning, is a small tree that grows to about 5m. In autumn the leaves turn a bright red and the berries have an exciting colour scheme of hot pink and bright orange, which only nature could get away with. The fruit is poisonous so keep children away from them but the plant is very hardy to both frost and wind.
  • You can still plant seedlings of pansies, poppies, primulas and polyanthus although they will only grow slowly with the soil cooling down.
  • When you see plants of Iberis sempervirens (candytuft) and Erysimum ‘Winter Joy’ (wallflower) in the nursery, buy a pot and plant them as they will brighten up your garden from mid-winter to early spring when very little is flowering. Wallflowers come in a range of colours but I still love the very hardy purple variety. Candytuft only comes in a pure white flowering form and looks stunning contrasted with the dark green small leaves.
