Vegetable gardens
  • If you have room, plant a green manure crop using lupins, peas, beans or some other nitrogen-fixing plant. You could also use a non-legume such as wheat, rye, oats or barley which will increase the organic matter in the soil but won’t fix the nitrogen. Plant leafy greens once you have cut these down as they will love the nitrogen and the friable soil developed by the extra organic matter.
  • Buy asparagus crowns in winter and plant in a permanent bed as they need to be left in the one spot. They love deep, friable, rich soil and you will need to dig a trench 50 to 75 cms deep. Throw some rotted cow, chook or sheep manure in the bottom and make a mound to sit the fleshy roots on. Spread the roots over the mound and then fill in the trench. The spears will develop in spring when they need fertilising again. Leave them for at least a year before you cut and start eating them.

We can do it all for you using our team of qualified horticulturists.
