Seaweed Tonics

  • Environmentally friendly as they are harvested from the beach and not from marine 'forests. They also have relatively few transport miles as they are made in Australia.
  • Glycine, one of the amino acids aids in nutrient uptake and synthesis
  • They are not fertilisers although manufacturers often add fertiliser to them so it is important to read the label to know what you are putting on your soil and plants

Vegetables

  • Plant seedlings of shallots and plan an area for a couple of globe artichokes to be planted next month. They will need to be left for a few years so the position will be semi-permanent. Consider planting them in the flower garden as an architectural feature.

  • Lightly tip prune plants such as correa, erica, azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias after they have finished flowering

Specific

  • Trim chrysanthemums and similar perennial plants after they have finished flowering leaving about 10cm of old canes
  • Prune roses early August by removing growth less than a pencil thick, crossing branches and very woody growth. Take fallen leaves and prunings to the green waste. (Don’t compost)
  • Treat rose bushes with lime sulphur ensuring that all stems are completely wet and soil under the plant is drenched to kill any fungal spores
