General
  • Save water by turning off automated controllers or reduce watering in your garden to about once a month. Take the time to inspect drippers as slugs and earwigs hide in them.
  • Remove weeds as they can harbour over-wintering diseases and pests
  • Assist with the break-down of large leaves by mowing over them (if you have a lawn mower) before raking up and putting them in the compost. If they don’t all fit in the compost, you can store them in closed garbage bags. Add some lime and manure to the leaves to speed decomposition. Ensure your compost is moist or it will not break down.
  • Pick up spent flowers of camellias and add them to your compost
  • Lightly tip prune plants such as correa, erica, azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias after they have finished flowering
  • Prune any suckers at the base of lilacs, dogwoods, crab apples or Manchurian pears
  • Check deciduous trees and shrubs and remove any dead or diseased wood
  • Scatter a light dressing of Blood and Bone or well rotted manure over the lawn and garden beds and lightly lime the lawn just before rain>/li>
  • Brighten up the garden by planting annual colour such as polyanthus or pansies
  • Take time to review the general structure and lay-out of the garden while the ‘bare bones’ are exposed. Examine the garden’s strengths and weaknesses and consider how you can improve areas of the garden and make them more drought-hardy
  • Apply organic matter, a soil wetting agent and a seaweed solution to your whole garden. This will help get your garden and plants in better condition for the winter months ahead.
  • If you have chooks, let them into the garden to scratch around and clean up pests such as slaters, snails and earwigs (protect the chooks from dogs and don’t leave the chooks out at night)
  • If you are putting grey water directly onto your garden or lawn, check the pH of the soil (you can buy a pH kit from your local nursery) to ensure it isn’t getting too alkaline. Change the areas the grey water is watering and try to give the area a ‘rinse’ with potable water every once in a while.
