The Challenges: to link the house to the back yard over three metres below; to make the back yard a usable and practical space for a young family; to maintain the beautiful views while providing summer protection from the western sun; to modernise the look of the house and provide a stunning entrance; to project manage the job with minimal disturbance to the busy lifestyle of the family.

The Solution: walls were knocked out and replaced with doors and windows and a three-level deck was built to get down from the house into the back yard; the natural slope was used to install an in-ground trampoline; the site was levelled by building a number of walls to allow a swing set to be installed and a level area of grass for playing on; some existing concrete was retained as a site for the cubby house; sails were built over the deck and deciduous trees planted to block out the western sun; outdoor lighting was installed to accentuate features and allow use of the decks and garden at night; the front porch was extended with a rendered wall enclosing a feature tree surrounded by mondo grass; the house was rendered to provide a modern look.

The Result: A modern-looking house that encourages year-round outdoor living; a usable backyard for both adults and children for entertaining and playing; a vegetable patch for sustainable living; a well-managed job with happy clients.
